Real stories about dating and relationships in New York City. Truth is more interesting than fiction.

What’s a flight from London to NYC anyway?

It’s a gorgeous Sunday here in . I’m thinking of dragging my laptop out to Bryant Park as a little experiment(rumor has it there’s wifi).  But first… today’s Guy’s Story. This week’s Guy’s Story is from another one of my twitter friend’s @mychickenfeed. You should check out his blog.

What’s a flight from London to NYC anyway?

Sitting in the peaceful surrounds of a serene yoga retreat on the beautifully lined Portuguese designed streets of Goa, India, I stumbled upon a cute picture of a girl while watching my friend wade through pictures on facebook. “Ahh, she is so cute, what’s her story?” I ask mischievously. Laughing a little, my friend lets me know the girl’s name, and smiles. A couple of weeks later I get an email from my friend telling me, ” So I was looking through the pictures of India, and my friend thought you were cute too!” WAHOOO! (my first thought) This girl is cute, really cute. I get a friend request from the girl a few days later.

I’m not really into the virtual dating experience, meaning I believe one can stimulate a connection with someone virtually, but at the end of the day you got to get in each other’s faces. It’s all in the chemistry for me. Massive problem, the cute girl lives in NYC, and I’m across the pond in Europe. After a couple of emails, I tell her I’m flying in for a weekend from London. “You serious?” she asks me puzzled. “For sure I said, no time for sleeping on it, I get in around 18h00 on Friday.” The cute girl of course gave me the, “My gran says that I’m not allowed to sleep with you on this weekend.” (The cute girl later told me that the minute I touched her knee on the first night while we were out for dinner at the Stanton Social Club, she knew she wouldn’t be following this piece of advice).

So I get into NYC. I LOVE NYC! I always feel so energised, and the buzz always gets me. I arrive at the cute girl’s place at the very moment she was entering her apartment, “Hi, I’m Simon…” as we smile awkwardly. She is much hotter in person than she is in her pictures (when does that ever happen?). The weekend was great. Cute girl had planned a whole itinerary for me (which we never kept – who would have guessed?) It really impressed me how much effort she put into making the whole weekend great. How often do people just sit around and not do anything!? The sex was great, she pushed all my buttons, she is a smart cute girl and she took me to Burger Joint! Drum roll please. I don’t live in NYC.

So is this all possible? Can it all be conquered? I don’t remember where I heard this, but I loved it, “long distance relationships, good luck to the four of you!” These words ring so true, but so many people are naive to the reality. Hey, I didn’t say there weren’t exceptions but I would be hesitant in thinking that it’s more than a handful of us that get it right. I’m all for the impossible, but I think its best achieved through a “lower the expectations” approach.

So a further 10 days of great sex in Tel Aviv, and a further 10 days or so in NYC, we’re in the same position. We don’t have a foundation for either of us to take on any risk. Maybe we don’t feel we right for each other? It’s not always that easy to just “up and fly”, or is it? Something has to give.

Cute girl and I have planned another trip together, and I’d love to get back to NYC soon, but life and work just keep getting in the way. We both continue with our own lives, we date other people, and even talk to each other about that! But I have come to a point in my life where I feel I can be real, I don’t need to pretend that I’m not looking around, she ain’t the class clown. This has created space for respect and an appreciation that we are all individuals moving towards that same slice of paradise we all crave. I want her to be happy and to find love, whether with me or someone else.

So I continue on the journey, not knowing where this story ends, but I do know this, she is still a cute girl, and time and space are figments of the imagination, I just don’t know what tomorrow brings. Whatever that is, I’m going to have fun doing it.

  1. Great post, but my favorite line all-time: ” . . . she ain’t the class clown.” I need a t-shirt that says this.

  2. Nice. You’re experiencing something that’s always been a dream of mine. A NY-LON relationship. Enjoy it, have fun, utilise it and spend as much time in NYC as possible. *Jealous*

  3. Dazediva says:

So fun !!! Can’t believe there are still cool guys like you around … :)
A Lon-NY relationship adds so much spice doesn’t it ! *sigh*
Like Single Filez said .. *jealous*

  4. Thanks ladies! If only life were nice and simple! Never!
