i’m a daily reader, though not a commenter, but i can’t resist music-talk. the magnetic fields “i don’t love you anymore” is an incredible breakup song.
sample lyrics: think of me as just your fan/who remembers every dress you ever wore.
For a breakup song, I love “Starting Now” by Ingrid Michaelson.
A favorite song from one of my favorite bands is also an amazing breakup song!
Beautiful South – A Little Time
For some reason I’ve always loved Prince’s Purple Rain for break-ups. Maybe because it’s Prince, maybe because it’s a sexy song, or maybe because I like the message of it. It’s best when listened to on repeat
Thank you for the awesome giveaway! All of those goodies look awesome and I’m super glad V-day is over too.
Dashboard Confessional makes for great breakup songs. My two favorites are:
Screaming Infidelities – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLapP04xtJU
Standard Lines – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CCG2PbI6Uo
This is a great giveaway because even if I don’t win, I just discovered many more awesome breakup songs!
How about Too Bad by Doug and The Slugs.
Sunshine Anderson – Heard it all before. I so LOVE the bitterness and snark that this song has, LOL
‘valediction’ by the foreign exchange
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5Uz9tf8ezc
packs quite a punch in the 2 minutes that it lasts.
Kate Bush’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ is my favorite.
You can crawl back home, say you were wrong;
Stand out in the yard and cry all night long.
Well, go ahead and water the lawn:
My give-a-damn’s busted.
My Give a Damn’s Busted by Jo Dee Messina
I will always love you by Whitney Houston..
I’m not Okay by My Chemical Romance
My favorite breakup song is Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
The title says it all.
I have 2 currently:
“Songs Like This” by Carrie Underwood
“Want” by Natalie Imbruglia
Few More:
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart – Al Green
You Won’t Find This – Carrie Underwood
Bleeding Love – Leona Lewis
Goodbye to You – Michelle Branch
Cry – Kelly Clarkson
Regret – LeToya
How – Katherine McPhee
Yes, it’s been a rough year …
The Break Up Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em) by Greg Kihn
Sooner or Later by Michelle Branch because living (extremely) well is the best revenge.
And nothing feels better than to have them eating out of the palm of your hand, lusting after you, when you know you no longer want them.
Hmmm, I actually think “The Breakup Song” by Greg Kihn is one of my favorites, it’s just so catchy and 80ish
“Woke Up New” by The Mountain Goats is so spot-on that it wrings my stomach to hear it. I would never recommend this song to anyone who is actually going through a break-up, but it sings the hurt even more truly than my own memory does.
“Song for the Dumped” is a little more upbeat. “Smile” by Lily Allen isn’t a work of musical genius, but it’s how you hope things will turn out when you get screwed.
Honestly, I like listening to the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird after a break up because it makes me want to go outside and have new experiences in a world that’s bigger than any one heartbreaker. It sounds motivational-speaker cheesy, I know. But that’s how the music makes me feel!
OK Simone Here is the winner!! Try not to cry I almost did the first time I heard it live.

You Oughta Know – Alanis Morrisette
Angry rocker chick. My favorite line is ‘when I scratch my nails down someone else’s back I hope you feel it’
Aerosmith – Cryin’
FUN. so not going with the sad ones…. here’s some chick power for ya
pink – u + ur hand
carrie underwood – before he cheats
kelly clarkson – never again
kelly clarkson – behind these hazel eyes
christina aguilera – fighter
My favorite breakup song is “Bury It’ by Yahzarah
My favorite breakup song is Avril Lavigne “Girlfriend”. It know it is a non-traditional breakup song, but I love it!
“Here without you” by 3 Doors Down
Joy Williams – “speaking a dead language”
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the obvious – “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor! Actually, the cover by Cake is really, really good too. A little rougher around the edges.
Keep Bleeding Love from Leona Lewis
I listened to that song on repeat and cried myself silly when i broke up with the ex.
“Don’t Dream it’s Over” by Crowded House
“Oh, does she love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
Do you love her?
Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
Do you want me?
Should I leave? ”
:S :S :S
great breakup song… “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce. awesome giveaway!
Smile – Lily Allen.
dude i love the stars. that song was on my playlist this morning. excellent taste.
Thanks Rebekah. I ADORE Stars, especially that album.
My ultimate break up song is Kellie Pickler- Best Days of Your Life. Def makes you feel better and the video is great!!
Carrie Underwood–Before He Cheats.
One from some yrs ago is Pat Benatar –Love is A Battlefield.
I am a huge fan of:
“Get Over It” – OK GO
The angry songs helped me get over my bad break up more quickly
ex factor by lauryn hill
love you should have come over by jeff buckley
i can’t make you love me by bonnie rait
Hm, I had to mull this one for a bit, but the one that really sticks with me is “Love is Blindness” by U2.
William Fitzsimmons’ “Just Not Each Other”.
Over It-Katherine Mcphee
Definitely “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson.
I’d rather talk about happy songs instead of break up songs, but I do live in the real world.
My favorite “mean spirited” break up song is “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”
Runner up: Meatloaf’s “Two out of three ain’t bad.”
The last bad breakup I just remember driving in my car listening to Sinead O’ Connor’s “Nothing Compares to You” and crying. Pathetic? Yes. Theraputic? Absolutely.
I like “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson! Such a good song
“Think of You (Empty Room)” by Every Avenue is awesome — it’s fast enough to be an angry breakout song but slow enough to cry to. All the perks of a breakup song all wrapped up into one catchy little package!
Heartless by Kanye West, yes, he’s a douche, but the song is a phenomenal one.
Lyric: You run and tell your friends that you’re leaving me, they say that they don’t see what you see in me, you wait a couple months then you gon’ see, you’ll never find nobody better than me
All time favorite has been “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morrisette.
and recently, I love “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood.
Those are great anger songs.
But for a good tear up, I listen to “Foolish Games” by Jewel.
