Last night’s date was a bust. A total bust. But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself.
I started my night out partying with Lostplum(more fun with the folks at Thrillist). The party was fun, although we attracted the unwanted attention of a rather strange gentleman who proceeded to follow us around for the rest of the night. Absolute was their drink sponsor and the drinks were powerful and sticky sweet. The kind of thing I’d never drink under normal circumstances.
We left the party in time for me to get to my 9 o’clock date. I’d been looking forward to this one. It was with someone I connected with online, last week, and since then we’d exchange many emails. He seemed to be my type of guy (that should have been my first clue to run). I’d normally not show up to a date with a couple of drinks in me, but in this case, I’m glad it worked out that way. The alcohol helped a lot.
He was an old picture guy who, quite frankly, made it clear that he thought rather highly of himself and his place in New York’s cultural world. He did a lot of name dropping (and he did drop some impressive names) and a lot of grinning. Rather smugly.
Like I said, a bust. But I was pretty drunk, so I didn’t care. Not a bit. On a normal night I might have been disappointed and then been mad at myself for being disappointed (a girl just shouldn’t go into a first date with expectations). But not last night.
And then I got on the subway to go home and turned up the music on my iphone. Suddenly, I was smiling. The very first song was one of my all time favorites, but one that I hadn’t heard in a while, Downtown Train by Tom Waits.
And then there was another good song after that (I tried to put a little song player in here, but couldn’t figure it out) and another good song after that. I sang along the whole way home. I kinda feel bad for the people on the train, cause I’m tone deaf, but so what. The music was making me happy.
And then, it hit me as soon as I got out of the subway, I was starving. I’d barely eaten anything all day. Just a scone for breakfast and some cheetos for lunch. Plus a couple of veggie dumplings at the party. Nothing else. And I’d had several drinks. I needed food. I hightailed it over to my local pizza place, only to find out it was closed. And so were all of my other local take-out places. It was a lot later than I’d realized. So I just grabbed some junk food at the corner bodega (I really gotta start to eat better).
Anyway, looking back on it, it wasn’t that bad of an evening. The party was kinda fun and I had a great trip home from my lousy date. Who really cares about the other stuff?
