I’ve been out of town for about a week now. I’m not on a glamorous vacation, nor am I tucked away at a country cottage. I’m just hanging out with a loved one while I try to piece together the recently tattered pieces of my life (and helping him out with some stuff while I’m at it).
I’m starting to miss New York. Well, that’s not true. I started to miss New York several days ago. I love to travel and to experience new places, but I love my city more than anyplace. And when I’m away I start to miss it.
I fell in love with Manhattan as a kid. I loved coming into the city to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and all of the cool window displays during Christmas time. I’d watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s over and over and think, “I’m gonna live there one day.”
So, is it any surprise that when I’m away and start to feel homesick one of the places I want to go to when I get back is The Campbell Apartment? It is the ultimate in classic New York chic. As much as I love my lower key city, with my small local restaurants and long subway rides in search of the best bbq, there is a little girl inside of me that’s all about New York glamour.
And yeah, you can have an amazing date there, you just have to time it right.
Alright, for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, The Campbell Apartment is a bar/lounge, with a jazz age decor and sensibility that’s actually in Grand Central Terminal. The space is stunning. Stunning. The prices are pretty damn stunning too. This is not the place to go to get your drink on.
And it’s a bit quirky. They have a dress policy. No jeans and no sneakers. I hear they’re pretty strict about it. And on any given night the place is jam packed with an after-work crowd. But like I’ve said, I’ve had some great dates here. Think late Saturday afternoon. Or Sunday. When all of those commuters are safe at home.
A date at The Campbell Apartment is a treat for me Surrounded by beauty, drinking a perfect Manhattan, having a pleasant conversation. I can pretend that everything in the world is exactly the way it’s supposed to be. At least for a little while.
