Real stories about dating and relationships in New York City. Truth is more interesting than fiction.

If It Works, It Works

I almost didn’t write this post.  The place I’m about to tell you about is already overflowing with couples on dates.  It’s just that kind of place.

But the more I thought about it the more I thought it would be interesting to write about WHY it’s such a great date spot.  Because it is.

Pipa is a tapas bar that’s located in the ABC Carpet building (just in case you want to buy some of those fabulous chandeliers and carpets).  The first thing I noticed the first time I went there was the lighting.  It’s dark and cozy (I’ve always loved bar lighting, even when I was in my 20s and had less to hide) but there’s a certain softness to the room.  It must be all of the candlelight bouncing off the chandeliers and the wood.

It’s a big space with high ceilings.  And it can get crowded (all of those other people on dates).  But it doesn’t feel loud or overwhelming.  Just full, in a good way.

They have a decent enough wine list, though you’ll see a lot of people drinking sangria (and if sangria is your thing, it’s quite good).  I’ve only ever had the tapas, never a full meal, and everything I’ve ever ordered has been wonderful.  Are they the best traditional tapas in the city?  No.  But they are quite good.  And reasonably priced.  And perfect for sharing (back to the sharing thing again  – I really do think that sharing food/food that is meant to be shared is the way to go for the early stages of dating).

So basically, you’ve got this stunning room that feels cozy and welcoming.  Good food and drink.  Great lighting.  It’s not exorbitantly expensive (especially when you consider the neighborhood).  It all comes together to spell an easy WIN.

Well, the date can still suck.  Any date can suck.  But if you go to Pipa you’re giving yourself a fighting chance.

Oh, and here’s a extra bit of info for you.  If you make plans to go to Pipa and find that it’s too crowded you can walk right across the first floor of ABC to their other restaurant, Lucy’s.  It’s not nearly as nice, but it will do in a pinch.

Pipa is definitely a unique spot! My favorite meetingplace in that neighborhood for dates or otherwise is MetroCafe & Wine Bar on 21st b/t Park & Broadway. They have a series of wine flights you can choose, which are great for conversation, and they have an amazing dim sum and appetizer menu. And, the service is amazing, so that’s one less thing to worry about. :)

Welcome to the blog. I’m also a big fan of MetroCafe. It’s on my mental radar for a future Best Dates Spots. I guess the reason I mentioned Pipa first was because it’s just so romantic and someone asked me for suggestions for a romantic date 2nd date spot.
